Ham Radio Microphone Rewiring to 1/4" Jack?
I just bought an old Shure CB mic. there is no adapter at the end, just 4 loose wires i assume for a 4pin adapter. figuring out what wire goes to what ( ground, lead, PTT) should be pretty easy, but could anyone tell me how i should connect each wire to convert this mic into a usable vocal mic with a 1/4 jack i can plug into a guitar amp?
any help is greatly appreciated.
It depends on whether there is an internal preamplifier that needs an external voltage to power it. It also depends on the color code of that particular microphone. For example, if the wires are white, red, brown and either bare metal or black, the white is probably the mic element, which would be connected to the tip of the 1/4" plug, the red is probably the PTT switch, brown is probably a positive power supply voltage of 9-12V to power the mic's preamp (if it has one), and the bare metal or black is probably ground, which would be connected to the sleeve of the 1/4" plug.
You can use an ohmmeter to verify the wiring. Measure the resistance between the pins with the PTT depressed and not depressed. Whichever pins go to nearly zero ohms when the PTT is depressed are probably the PTT and ground. Then measure the other pins to find ones with between ten and few hundred ohms across them. Those are probably the mic and ground. If your mic has an internal preamp, you probably need to either power it or open up the case and bypass it for use with your guitar amp.
