Beatles 1966 Amplifiers?
In pictures from 1966 the beatles can be seen with 6 vox ac-100s on stage as at shea stadium four in the front and two benhind ringo to his right in cleveland the beatles had two on johns side and 3 on pauls with a visible ac-100 head behind those three making it appear as if john was playing on two amps as well as george but what is the purpose of the extra amp is paul playing it
Backup amps in case one went down. Remember these are still UK amps using 220w, being patched into US 110w power systems. So a backup was usually available in the stage formation if needed. In many of those photos you can also see Paul's Rickenbacker 4001 bass as a backup in case there was a problem with the Hofner. Such was stage setups in those days that they didn't even have guitar stands, so the backups would just be lying on the drum riser, or leaned against the back of an amp. Since John & George would usually have an extra guitar between them (usually George's 12-string Rick, altho sometimes John would have his short-scale 12-string as well), there was less concern than if the only bass went down.
Since answering this question for you yesterday, I remembered that they also had a Vox keyboard on that tour for "I'm Down". So John would have had one amp for his Epiphone Casino, one for the Vox Keyboard. George would have had one for his Casino, Paul one for the Hofner, and one backup. The two behind Ringo at Shea may have been extra backups, or they may have been from the opening act. They certainly weren't used as stage monitors.
