What do you recommend for handheld airband radios/transceivers?

I am looking for a handheld airband radio and/or transceiver for my boyfriend's birthday. He is a pilot, and originally, I just wanted toget him a fm/am radio that would interrupt with air traffic communication. I have heard that the Maycom ar 108 is a great product for that. However, now I am thinking he would rather have a transceiver that he can use as backup when he is flying. I am totally lost as to what brand or product to buy. .... ICOM or Vertex? Also, what is the difference between COM and NAV-COM?

Both Icom and Vertex (Yaesu) are good radios. I have one of each and there are some differences but they both do a good job. The Vertex has better receive level audio making it easier to use without a headset but most of the time a headset should be used anyway (at least in flight). The ICOM is easier to just use, better user interface and a better receiver in my thoughts. The Icom seems to receive less "noise" than the Vertex. Either one should do the job.

The COM radios allow the pilot to talk and communicate with ATC, etc. The NAV/COM units also include a Navigation receiver which allows the pilot to receive VOR/ILS channels and be able to navigate using those facilities using an internal CDI (some units receive the nav frequencies but do not include a CDI and are worthless for NAV use). The Nav/Com units will usually be slightly higher than just a Com but they have more use in flight.

Some units also include weather radio channels which allow reception of the VHF NOAA broadcasts and a couple of the units allow reception of standard FM radio as well.

A couple of the lower cost units (both Icom and Vertex) come with Alkaline batteries and do not come with rechargeable packs! Pay the extra and get a unit with a rechargeable battery. (you do have to keep them charged BUT they will be less expensive in the long run.) LiIon batteries are the best as they have great usage but are more expensive.

The VXA300 can be found just over 200 as can the Icom A6 both are good units the A24 includes the Nav as does the VXA300. The VXA710 has alot of features that really aren't used and makes it not really worth the money (my opinion again) but some things just aren't worth the extra $$ if they aren't used. It is a nice radio though.

Do SHOP AROUND! There are DEALS for Christmas on both brands from SOME Dealers!!!!
