Need to wire light, switch and outlet w/power at light; using surface mount.?
I'm replacing a pull chain fixture. I have all the stuff (surface mount boxex, contuit, wires, switches, outlet, new fixture. I need to know how to wire it. The power is coming into the light now. How do I put it out to the outlet (separate) on one side and to the switch to control the light on the other (I don't want the outlet switched).
The key is to identify the "hot" wire that you have at your existing pull chain fixture. "hot" is always black. You will need to run a black wire from this wire to your outlet, connecting it to the side with the smaller of the two prong holes. You will need to run another hot wire to the switch. If you are using conduit then run another black wire back from the switch to the new light fixture. If you are using Romex then you will need to use the white wire to serve as a black wire to return power to the light fixture from the switch. Attach this white wire to the black wire of your light fixture. All other white wires need to be tied together. The white wire going to your outlet needs to be connected to the side with the larger prong hole of the outlet. Tie all the bare groung wires together into one big bundle, and wire any green screws that may be present to this bundle as well. I hope this is clear enough.
