Received a 3k check in the mail after applying for a job online. SCAM?

I applied for a job to work from home online.. craigslist to be exact. I had to answer a short survey then send this guy my name, address, age, sex, and phone number, along with my resume. He calls me froma blocked number and i wont answer, then he asks me on Yahoo Messenger why i wont pick up. I tell him that i don't answer locked calls and he can unblock it if he wants to talk to me. Well, he said he would be sending me a "mini office" which is a 56 lbs package with a laptop, printer, scanner, and microsoft office. I get a $2850 cashiers check in the mail on Saturday, and he tells me to take $100 for myself and Western Union the rest of it to some lady, and gave me her address and stuff... What on earth is going on??

It's a scam. I work in a bank and unfortunately we see this a lot. Especially on the surveys. See, you wire the money to the "lady" and then shortly thereafter the check is returned to you as either counterfeit or insufficient. You are then held responsible to repay the bank the full amount of the check if it was either cashed or made available to you upon deposit.

Any time you have any questions about the authenticity of a check, it's always safest to take it to the bank. They have means to verify it but it isn't an immediate process. It does take time.

Please don't deposit it and send the money. It is a very common scam.
