Should the U.S government go back to the gold standard to back up the dollar?
I have been doing my research and the gold that was backing up the dollar has been removed by President Nixon back in 71 now the dollar is worthless to us and it will keep dropping in the years to come should we go back to using gold to back our dollar value or should we just keep making money out of thin air to please the federal reserve.
Actually it was FDR who screwed with the gold. Up to him we used GOLD for larger amounts of money, SILVER for the smaller. $20 was one ounce of gold, $10 was a half ounce, etc. A dollar was 1 ounce of silver. 50 cents was a half ounce. etc. The money was worth the amount of metal in the coin. FDR took us off the gold standard, pulled in all the gold coins and gold certificates and then deflated the dollar to $35 an ounce. And he made it illegal for Americans to hold gold bullion. You can be sure that really pissed off the other nations that we owed money to as they took a big hit as they got paid far less gold.
But we still had silver. Until Johnson in 1964 took us off the silver standard and pulled in all the silver coins and silver certificates. He still kept it illegal for Americans to hold gold bullion. That was the same year deficit spending became standard policy in Washington DC . But we still honored the $35 an ounce exchange rate on gold.
Then Nixon came along and allowed Americans to own gold and he untied the dollar from gold. Good immediately went to $50 an ounce and held pretty steady at that rate.
Then along comes Jimmy Carter and run away inflation. By the end of his term, gold had gone up to $900 an ounce and then fell back to $300. Gold speculators got burned big time, as did silver speculators.
Bottom line, we are not going to tie our money to gold again. That would require Washington to be responsible and not spend money (gold) that they do not have. They like inflation as it is a means of paying off debts generated today by paying with deflated money tomorrow.
To give you an example, in 1979 I bought my first house. It was 1800 square feet, three bedroom, 1 car garage, 1 bathroom. I got it for $28,000. Today, 30 years later, the exact same house sells for $280,000. That is ten times more. A dollar today is worth 1/10th of what it was 30 years ago.
So a debt of 1 BILLION generated by the government in 1979 is only worth $100 Million today. They get to "write off" 90% of the debt And they are continuing the same behavior.
We have to get them (the government) under control. I suggest we call a Constitutional Convention and bypass the federal government and pass a few new Amendments.
Balanced Budget Amendment.
Income Tax Cap Amendment.
etc.
