how to hook up a 1202 mixer to my ham radio?
I want to run my mic through the behrenger 1202 and then out to my ham radio so I can trim my microphone sound ,how do I do it?
The 1202 mixers MAIN OUT (L or R) will be connected to the mic socket on the radio.
You will have to arrange a separate PTT switch to switch from RX to TX and connect that to the radios mic socket.
Some radios will have a KEY socket on the back which is also a way of getting at the PTT control.
Check your radios users manual for PTT and mic socket pinouts.
A mic will of course have to be connected to the mixer console.
You will likely use a conventional mic made for vocal use rather than a radios fist mic in this application.
In these mics there will be two main choice , a non powered mic , or a mic that requires Phantom power.
Go with a Phantom powered mic if your mic cord lead is going to be unusually long.
If your lead is going to be short (most likely) , then there is no advantage going with a Phantom powered mic.
There however is nothing wrong with using a Phantom powered mike with a short lead.
Make sure the Phantom power switch is in its correct position for the mic used.
In both type of mics , they will connect via the XLR socket in one of the MIC sections.
If your non powered mic comes with a 1/4 plug , you will have to fashion up and adaptor to suit the XLR socket.
Ebay also has these adaptors cheap , but you may have to check the wiring internally to ensures that it is wired up right.
It pays to get the best quality mic that you can afford , one that require the least amount of adjustment from the mixer to get it to sound good.
Only use the least amount of enhancement from the mixer that provides a clear and natural signal.
If the station on the other end of the QSO can tell that you are running a mixer or EQ , then you have it turned up way too much -- back it off.
