SWL receive only wire antenna question?

Can I use a 6 pin A/V cable as an antenna wire? If I were to connect all the pins on both ends? How about four wire telephone line, connected at each end. ONE MORE, If I feed a hand held SW receiver (icom rc 5), with a single wire to the center of the antenna connector, do I also attach a ground rod wire to the exterior of the antenna connector, or only connect to input center and forget the casing (ground)?

Well, with any receiving antenna height is going to be the most important factor. Length would be secondary, though length will also improve reception.

If you have a 6 conductor cable, of 10 feet in length, and connect the 6 leads at each end of the cable together, like in a pigtail splice, you will have what is essentially a single conductor, of 10 feet.

If, however, you splice them together so you have a continuous length of wire, you will increase the overall length of the antenna.

For instance lets call the 6 conductors

A 1A
B 1B
C 1C
D 1D
E 1E
F 1F

A is the end of the wire, which is connected to the center point of the Input on the R5. Splice 1A and 1B together(1A1B), which makes a conductor of twice 10 or 20 feet. Splice B and C (BC)together, increasing the length to 30 feet. 1C and 1D (1C1D)spliced together make it 40 feet. Then D and E (DE) are spliced together, making it 50 feet in length. 1E and 1F (1E1F)are spliced together.

This produces a conductor with one wire connected to the input of the R5, by a banana plug, or some other single conductor pin type connection (try Radio Shack, if ICOM didn't include one with the package) and the free end of conductor F, which can be used to connect to any nonconducting support, like a rope or insulator. The antenna itself is a sort of a "shortened" wire, which is electrically 60 feet in length, but only takes 10 feet of space.

On word of caution, be sure to insulate the ends of the wires from one another. I mean make sure A, BC, DE and F are insulated using wire nuts or plastic electrical tape, and the same goes for 1A1B, 1C1D and 1E1F.

If they short out, though the current levels are so low that it will be unnoticable to the radio, it will shorten the antenna.
