how do I know if my TV is HD?
That might sound like a stupid question, but I really don't know! I bought a Sanyo TV in 2004, I'm not sure if I even knew what HD was back then. Well, I don't have the manual and it doesn't say HD on it but there is a s-video outlet on the back and 3 component outlets that are as follows - green Y, blue PB, and red PR. Also an outlet that looks similar to the one for cable that says UHF/VHF/CATV then 75 followed by a symbol that looks like a pair of headphones(I hope this makes sense!). I did some research on this but couldn't quite figure it out. From what I understand the s-video is outdated and the Y PB PR components replace it. If my TV has these hook-ups does that mean that it is a HD TV?
I just bought a PS3 so I'm trying to get the most out of it. Will my TV take HDMI cables? Also, I have a s-video cable going from the Playstation to the TV. Would using the Y PB PR components be better? Thanks for any help you can provide:)
Your TV is -- maybe -- an "HD Ready" TV. If so, what that term means is that it will be able to display HD from the component inputs, but is incapable of tuning in HDTV on its built-in tuner.
You don't have the manual any more, so you can't look up the specs in it, but -- if you would post the model number I(we) could look it up online.
Even if the TV isn't "HD ready" it will still give the best possible image from your PS3 if you use the component video hookups.

The UHF/VHF/CATV 75 ohm (greek letter omega, which is what looks like a pair of headphones, stands for "ohms") connector is the antenna or cable TV input. It is the analog tuner input on your set (not digital).
S-video isn't really being replaced by component video (it's just a different kind of video signal), but componenent video is much better; it can handle progressive scan and even HD video (things S-video and composite video can't do).
You can't hookup HDMI if it doesn't have an HDMI input (and adapting from HDMI wouldn't improve the image). But component cables would be better than composite or S-video, and can even carry HD if your set can handle it (otherwise, they would carry progressive scan SD which would then be the very best you can get with your set).
