Discone antenna user?
I have a small discone that works well. Top whip about 20 ", sloping about 20", about 3 feet total height with six horizontal radials at 7" length. Does it matter if I mount it upside down? This is a receive only antenna. All listening on 800mhz. If the vertical whip is cut to 800 mhz, will this help? I understand correct antenna length is necessary for transmit. Adding to the four downward radials do anything? How about feeding with two coated stranded wires instead of coax? Feed is 20 feet. Thank You
Mounting upside down isn't the best idea, it will work but it is more effective with the TOP end UP. The radials are a "ground plane". If you "tune" the vertical, you should also "tune" the radials or performance (GAIN) will be lost since discones are balanced and multibanded there isn't any large advantage in most case. NO do not use coated stranded wires, coax is 50 omhs to match the feed point of the antenna, using two wires will loose that match and cost in performance as well! You loose the antenna balance as well. Consult the ARRL Antenna Book to better understand TUNED, MATCHED antennas!
