Air box or Engine Temperature sensor?
I have a 1977 VW Beetle with Bosch AFC fuel injection. How can I tell if the air box or the # II Engine Temperature sensor is malfunctioning? The Sensor reads 7,000 OHMS but it should be 2,500. The Air box shows the right OHMS as specified in the manual BUT it had been tampered with. The previous owner opened it up because the adjustment for the air/fuel ratio was not enough. They might have re-adjusted the air box to compensate for a bad temperature sensor eh? The previous owners mechanic might have use a band-aid solution to skirt around a problem with the peoples car running either to rich or too lean.
How can I rectify this problem? How do I know how to reset the air box (air flow meter) back to the factory setting? A new air box runs $180 to $350 american dollars.
Is there a way to check to see if the computer module is operating properly?
You sound like a smart guy, so... I think temp 2 is part of the air flow assembly. You assumption that it was tampered with to compensate for another problem is probably correct. Fact is, if you can't get the temp sensor replaced in your old unit,you will have to buy another. Setting/adjusting the "new unit" needs to be done with an emissions analyzer to do it right.All else needs to be "correct" with motor before the adjustment. Smart guy can do it by ear. Get the temp sensor readings correct cold and hot, disconnect OX sensor, turn screw till just running smooth from lean, add a bit, connect OX. Also, you should be taking your readings at computer plug,as it checks wiring/connections at same time.
