How much tension should one have in the shrouds supporting the mast in a small dinghy?
Bought a used small American 14-6 to learn to sail. Have to replace a bent up shroud adjuster and when I get the new one, was wondering exactly how much tension or slack there should be in the shrouds.
With any mast, be it antenna or sail boat, you don't want to stress the mast much when it has no load. With that in mind, turn the tension till the lines can be pushed on and not bend the mast. That said, when you are dealing with large rigging and real large number of supports, all bets are off and you need a rigger to set it up properly. My theory is- if there is a section in the yellow pages for it,- better not try it alone.
