Neighbors Ham Radio Tower Interference?
My neighbors radio tower is causing interference to my land line telephone and my built in home intercom. For emergency issues I cannot hear over the noise on the telephone and have to answer the door in person as my intercom is garbled with noise. The deed restrictions allow for towers and satellite dishes. I asked him if he new of any filters that would help me and he did not know of any. Shouldn't he be responsible for the cost of any remedy and would any local ordinances help get them removed. They are an eyesore and a nuisance. Thank you
I agree with the previous posters, I think he is probably not a ham, at least I prefer to think he isn't since he isn't being particularly cooperative.
The second poster said that it is a problem with your devices. This doesn't mean that a Ham wouldn't be able to suggest a remedy.
The trouble here is that it also goes back to the old days when Ham transceivers were not as well shielded as they are today, and Hams were obliged to help their neighbors with interference they had caused on their TVs. Some of the time, when a filter was added, by the ham, a neighbor might have something else go wrong with the TV, and blame the filter, and consequently the Ham. When the FCC first asked for Hams to assist with the digital switch, the national Amateur organization quickly reminded the FCC about the legal problems this brought up in the past, and the request was withdrawn.
Now, there are a couple of things you can do. If what you are hearing is noise, like a static sound, it's likely that you are dealing with a common mode interference. You can use filter devices, made from ferrite or powdered iron. These can be purchased at Radio Shack. There are those that sort of clip on the power leads to the device, and look like a bead, and those that are rectangular. You might use the first on the doorbell, and the second on the phone. The directions for use are on the packages, but its basically taking a few loops in the phone cord and wrapping it around one side of the choke (that's what these are called) and if that doesn't do it, take a couple of turns around the other side of the choke as well. These are rectangular, and they are clipped together, so its fairly easy to open them up, and can be done without disconnecting the phone. The only trouble I've found with them is because they come apart, and the little bits of metal are sometimes a challenge to get back into the plastic framework when reassembling them.
