How practical is ham radio for everyday situations?
Hi,
I'm highly interested in getting licensed and buying a Ham radio, but I'm wondering if my intended purposes can be realized. I'm interested in ham radio mainly for practical purposes, not really for chatting or contests or long distance stuff.
Here are a few scenarios:
Let's say that I am in need of quick directions to a location just a few miles away, will I be able to bring up someone on my radio that could help?
How about if I am looking for a quick fact, perhaps asking someone to check their computer?
I'm just worried there aren't enough users in most areas (let's say both rural and urban areas).
Thanks.
Edit: These situations would be when I cannot access a computer and may not have my cell phone.
Seems a tad bit of overkill. Why don't you just Google what you need to know?
What would be the point of speaking to local people via Ham radio? Looks like you've missed the point entirely.
