Why are small ham radio antennae shaped like a satellites?
Does it help to make antennae shaped like a cube or is it better to have them on one plane(flat)?
Are there methods for calculating the size and ratio of the vanes?
Sorry so layman terms I don't know much about aerials.
(but I do know Shinoloa)
Oh the reason I ask is I want to make a cool and functional aerial for my house.
I think what you have seen is what is called a ground plain antenna. That is, you have an element that is vertical and 3-4 that are either horizontal or at a 45 degree angle. The vertical part is the main radiating portion of the antenna and the horizontal elements are connected to the ground.
However, there are many, many different kinds of antennas. I have a very extensive library of antenna books, and I still have only scratched the surface.
You have many considerations when it comes to antennas: polarization, frequency, what type of communications path, what type of communications in general, and space requirements. Almost all antennas are some kind of a compromise.
As for calculations for a simple antenna that will match a 50 ohm antenna input -- the type that most of us are familiar with on HAM radio transceivers and CBs -- you simply divide 234 by the frequency in megahertz, which for the CB radio would be 234 divided by 27 (since it is 27mHz) this will give you the length in feet. You cut one piece of wire, or tubing to this length, and attach it to the center conductor of the coax. You cut 3 more and attach that to the shield. The one that you attached to the coax center should go vertical, and the ones attached to the shield should slope down at a 45 degree angle, and spaced 120 degrees apart.
I am still a little stumped on your question, but I thought that I would give it a go anyway. I have been a HAM for 10 years, a shortwave listener, as well as a scanner buff since I was about 8 years old. I also have a very extensive knowledge on antennas.
