Can I network my 2 computers, if one doesn't have provision for an ethernet connection?
I was going to use my 2 year old (chinese made) Mercury/Icom 256/40/1.3 single core as a firewall, and network through an ethernet connection to my new Acer Aspire T690: 1000/160 dual core, but that plan has gone out the window, so can I network them another way, possibly by connecting to the internet through the Acer, and getting an adapter for the ethernet cable output, into the phone connection input plugspace, which was formerly used for the internet connection to the Mercury/Icom? Any other helpful suggestions are most welcome, since I need to be able to sit at one for a while, then stand at the other, while I help people with their mental health problems, on Y!A.

get a cheep router linksys will do
plug both computers in.
if you have broadband your all done the router will do rest
sounds like you have dial up though so do this
xp has a thing called ICS internet connection sharing.
use your windows network wizzard to configure this for you it will make it so that both computers can share the dial up. (deathly slow but works fine. we did this for years in the old days....)
