Are there any ham radio operators in Victoria, Australia?
If so, what do you expect them to be doing when there's no emergencies? Because the only emergencies we get are the fires in summer.... I'm building one because I've been teaching myself these things for a while. Any suggestions?
Sorry, you're building one what?
An amateur radio licensee does more than just emergency comms, and in fact does lots more operating that is just personal communications with other ham operators around the world.
I assume you don't have an amateur operators' certificate of proficiency, and don't have a station license or amateur callsign.
Except for operating on CB radio, you must hold a license of some form, or you will be in breach of the law.
If you are studying towards being an amateur, and not at least in touch with amateur operators, I suggest that you should seek a ham radio club in your area.
The Wireless Institute of Australia's site lists affiliated clubs and lots of other information about amateur radio. Please look it up!
Note, it is possible to gain a basic ham radio license now, with just 1 weekends' tuition and examination. It is really easy.
Then, you can do further study if you wish, to gain a standard or advanced license, and gain the extra priveleges that the higher licenses enjoy.
