Antenna Rope

Hi :) i know nothing about cars, no one knows what's wrong :( ?

i have a 1997 cavalier and i was just driving along and i stopped to get gas. i got back in my car and tried to start it, it didn't start. the engine? didn't even turn over, there was no sound at all. my antennae still went up and everytrhing...my boyfriend pushed it to the side of the gas station and we tried a million times to start it and it wouldn't. my dad towed it home and it still wouldn't start for about a week. right when we were putting the rope on to take it to the shop, it started, so i drove it up there. they kept it for two days and then just returned it because it worked for them every time. the day after i got it back, it stopped starting again. so i took it to another shop, they put in a butt connector? and they said it was fixed. it seemed to be when i drove it home, but the next day it was broken again. every time it does start back up, the clock resets. anyone know what's wrong? :(

The next time it doesn't want to start, pull the head light switch out and see if the lights come on. If they do come on, and they look like they are at full brightness, the battery and connections are fine. If they turn on, but are dim, you could have either a faulty battery, or a bad alternator. (You can bring your car to a local auto parts store, and they will check your battery and alternator for free. Try O'Rileys auto store, they are always super nice. Checker or Napa should be able to check them as well.)

If your lights are bright when you pull the switch out, the problem is most likely in the starter. This would be my guess, since it is intermittent.

Either way, I'd get the battery and alternator checked at a parts store.

Good Luck.
