Amateur Radio Transceivers

What's a wide band transceiver?

I am new to the whole amateur radio things, but i want to know what is a good transceiver that can pick up a wide band of frequencies. If possible most of the radio spectrum. Any suggestions?

When I was a little kid first starting to tinker with radio and electronics, my father told me, If you're serious, the first thing you need to do is get some books and educate yourself about electronics. Which I did, and it's been one of the best pieces of advice I've had. I suggest you do the same about amateur radio. If you are serious, educate yourself and you will be better prepared to ask intelligent questions. The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) is a fantastic resource of all kinds of books and learning materials. Many of their key books have been in publication for decades. A good place to start might be "How To Become A Radio Amateur", among many others, including the mainstay, "The Amateur Radio Handbook", which is the bible of amateur radio. Also if you are serious, I highly recommend you become a ARRL member which includes their monthly magazine, "QST". Any one issue might well answer many of your questions, or at least provide resources.

Now about your question. You refer to covering "most of the radio spectrum". There is no transceiver that does that. While the Amateur Radio bands do span most of the spectrum, they don't cover all of it. The more expensive transceivers can cover most of the common amateur bands, but not all. If you are just starting out, you are probably not going to want to spend that kind of money.

You also referred to the term, "pick up", implying you might only be interested in RECEIVING, as opposed to transmitting and receiving with a transceiver. If this is the case, yes indeed, there are receivers that can cover continuously from 100 KHz (below the Broadcast Band) to well into the upper UHF frequencies (past cell phone frequencies). But again, you are talking about very expensive receivers. If you are truly interested in starting with Amateur Radio, I would suggest you start with High Frequency (HF) amateur bands, as they are very popular, and equipment is much cheaper. You can even easily build your own from kits, which I also highly recommend you investigate. To me, building your own equipment, at least some of it, it what real Amateur Radio is all about. The HF amateur bands cover frequencies from about 1.8 MHz to about 29 MHz, or 160 to 10 meters. You might be able to find a good deal on a used HF transceiver. Virtually all the name brands are good. Some of the most popular are ICom, Kenwood, Yeasu, all of which have many models to choose from. Check out www.worldradiomagazine.com, a free online full color magazine in pdf. There are a lot of resources on the Internet, but the Internet is not everything. Above all, educate yourself. I have pointed you in the right direction. Now the rest is up to you. Go for it!
